The Church Acting Badly: Part 4
The Church Acting Badly
A 5-Part Journey into Faith, Mistakes, and Hope for Imperfect Christians
Part 4 - What is the Church, Really?
It's not a museum; it's a hospital
Many people think the church is a "Museum for Saints." They think it is a place where perfect people go to show off how good they are. If you think this, you will be very disappointed when you see a Christian make a mistake!
The Church as a Hospital
A famous leader from long ago named Augustine said the church is actually a Hospital.
Think about a hospital. Who goes there? Sick people! You don't expect everyone in a hospital to be healthy. You expect them to be in the process of getting better. Some are just starting to heal. Some are still very sick.
The church is exactly the same. It is a place for "moral sinners" who are trying to follow Jesus.
"And that is what you were"
The Apostle Paul wrote a famous letter to a church in a city called Corinth. He listed many sins: stealing, greed, and drinking too much. Then he said something beautiful:
"And that is what some of you were."
He used the past tense. This means:
Growth takes time
Becoming a Christian does not make you perfect instantly. It is a long journey. The Bible describes it as a race or a war. It requires practice and effort.
If you see a Christian acting badly, remember: they are a patient in the hospital. They are still being treated. They are not finished yet.
In our final post, we will talk about why God still chooses to use imperfect people to change the world.
