The Church Acting Badly: Part 3

The Church Acting Badly
A 5-Part Journey into Faith, Mistakes, and Hope for Imperfect Christians

Part 3 - The Power of Saying "I'm Sorry"

Why honest Christians don't hide their mistakes
When the church acts badly, most people expect Christians to make excuses. We often want to defend ourselves. But the Bible teaches us to do something different: Confession.

What is Confession?
Confession simply means "to tell the truth about what we did wrong." It is the opposite of hypocrisy (pretending to be better than you really are).

The Confession Booth
A writer named Donald Miller once shared a great story. He was at a university where many people did not like Christians. He and his friends built a small "Confession Booth."

When students walked in, the Christians said: "We are not here to listen to your sins. We are here to confess our sins to you. We are sorry for how the church has been mean, political, and judgmental."

The students were shocked. Many of them started to cry. Why? Because the truth is powerful. When we stop pretending to be perfect, people can finally see the love of God.

A Bible for Messy People
The Bible is very honest about mistakes. It tells us about:
  • Abraham, who was a coward.
  • Moses, who had a bad temper
  • David, who committed a great sin.
  • Peter, who lied about knowing Jesus.

Why does the Bible tell us these stories? Because God want us to know that He uses imperfect people. You don’t have to be "good" to come to God. You just have to be honest.

When the church fails, we should not hide. We should say, "We were wrong. Please forgive us." This is the first step toward healing.

In the next post, we will look at a new way to describe what a "church" actually is.
